SUMMER TERM 2008
ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR (5.7.08) Early morning rain thankfully made way to a sunny afternoon and everyone who came to the Fair had a fantastic time. From donkey rides, to slides, from throw the sponge (with some very game teachers involved) to cream teas, there were lots of attractions to enjoy.

(27.6.08) Both Girls and Boys football teams have been doing well with the Girls eventually beaten in the final on Thursday. Sadly the boys team lost in the semi-final on Tuesday as they played against a VERY good side that included a boy over six feet and two players who are on the Arsenal Youth Team. Well done to both teams! |

Year 6 visit Imperial War Museum
(17.6.08) This week Year 6 visited the Imperial War Museum as part of their study of World War I and II. The trip featured - amongst many things - 'The Blitz Experience' where an actor dressed as a ARP warden (Air Raid Precaution), spoke about what it was like in the Blitz, including what had to be done if the air-raid siren sounded. The children also experienced an artificial trench, finding out what conditions were like for our forces at war. A lot was learnt and a great time was had by all.
Police give road safety talk
16th June 2008
St. Michael's junior school children welcomed the local constabulary in this week for a talk about road safety. The children were reminded of the importance of crossing the road safely and other safety issues such as when cycling. As part of the police's presentation, the children were treated to a series of short animations, each with an important message. STOP! LOOK! and LISTEN!

Year 6 have magical time at PGL Boreatton Park
6th June 2008

Year 6 should sleep well this weekend after returning from a fabulous time at PGL Boreatton Park. The sun shone, the birds sang, and the children screamed; as they applied nerves of steel in activities such as abseiling, zip-wire, giant swing, and trapeze; got wet whilst canoeing, raft-building, and swimming; and demonstrated their skills in hand and eye co-ordination through archery and fencing. Time was also spent orienteering and tackling all sorts of unpredictable obstacles in the sensory trail, which was as hilarious to watch as it was to take part in!
What with evenings filled with fun and games, plus a disco; it was an experience that Year 6 will never forget as their time at St. Michael's comes to an end this term.
See the photo gallery of the trip, plus coming soon - fingers crossed - a 'PGL 2008' dvd.

PGL Boreatton Park 2008

Several parents have asked for copies of the PGL kist list. If your child attended St. Michael's at the beginning of Year 5, they would have been provided with a PGL pack that included payment details and card, and a PGL brochure with kit list. However, if you have not received these, please click on the links below to download a copy of the kit list as well as the guidance letter sent out a few weeks ago. A letter detailing the final arrangements is also attached below. Please read these very carefully.

Highgate Science Lectures Go Off With A.....
St. Michael's junior children (Years 3-5) were treated to two explosive science lectures on Monday 19th May at Highgate School. These lectures were introduced a few years ago and have now become a popular annual event. The children really look forward to them!!!!!
The morning lecture - '50 Years of Space' - was taught by Dr. David Smith who is head of Physics at Highgate. David presented a highly technical slideshow with music, radio, and film clips; which centred on the race to space between the Russians and Americans. Children were mesmerised by the graphics presented to them, and were fascinated by how far humankind has come in such a short space of time.

Not surprisingly, the children were particularly excited by the prospect of one of Dr. Andrew Szydlo's chemistry lectures in the afternoon.
Andrew, pictured above, is a renowned scientist and now T.V star (as well as a parent at St. Michael's) who is passionate about chemical changes; particularly those that involve fire and explosions! As you might imagine, the children were completely captivated and found all the experiments highly entertaining! We all put our fingers to our ears for his big finale - a room shaking explosion using a balloon blown up by our very own Oskar Szydlo in Blue class!!!!
Thanks to all the staff at Highgate School for a great day out!

Prize Winning Children's Author Visits St. Michael's
Year 5 children were visited by well-known children's fantasy writer Cliff McNish this week. The children were able to ask him questions about his books and career, as well as carry out a very special writing task on characterisation. Cliff also did some research on ghost stories for a novel he is writing. Time was also made available for signing books. The children had a fantastic time and Cliff was impressed by the children's enthusiasm and creativity. To see more photos of Cliff's visit click here.
