                                 Star Writer of the Week

Every week a child from 5W will have a piece of their writing chosen for this special award. Not only will their writing be placed on this website, but he or she will also receive a certificate of merit and be awarded an Oscar for outstanding achievement in writing. This award (it's a copy of an Oscar!) will be placed on the child's desk for a week!

Writing will be chosen from either class work or from an activity carried out in the Writing Workshop.

To find out last week's Oscar winner, see below.

 BEATRIX!!!

WB 1.12.08   Little Red Riding Hood - an alternative tale intro - by Beatrix

I’m actually friends with Him you know. He is kind to me. He let’s me ride on his back and we play games like ‘Catch’ (often he wins).

Some people say I should fear Him.
They say, “Red, you darn well know what he does to our animals!”
I try to tell them that He is my friend, but no. They think He’s going to rip my scarlet cloak or something.
People don’t understand. They only ever think about dumb sheep and cows and chickens and even turkeys.
Anyway, we’re going on a walk today. We’re going to grandmas to deliver her weekly bread freshly made by me and my mum.
It’s a lovely day to walk you know.
            “Wonderful day,” says He.
I agree with what he says, though it is a little odd. I mean, the basket I’m carrying is a little bit heavy. The path we’re walking on is silent. It’s growing dark. Frowns are painting my forehead. This is weird.

Marmadoch

(A piece of writing from a class study of story beginnings)

The dark castle of Marmadoch had stood on Cratch Mountain as long as anybody could remember. Even the oldest pixie Crambert in the oldest woods evolved from dust years before Marmadoch was made.

The castle had a very important job. It's job was to hold the Magyka.

The Magyka was a ball. A ball that held dark magic.

To be precise it held all the dark magic in Calucia and if this ball was cracked then all the darkness and evil that it held would be spread out and the magical country would return to its former self.

That, was what all the panic was about.

Chalena first heard the news from Calucia's messenger, Rosis. At first she was pleasantly curious but then after people, pixies and fairies became more and more agitated. She got unpleasantly worried.

Soon her family was making preparations to leave. As were many families.

   Soon, Calucia would be deserted...

WB 17.11.08

If you're the type that jumps at the sight of blood or is easily scared, please look away now!

The Dark Stalker

It was there lurking in the dark. Pulling unexpecting victims into dark alleyways and murdering them. Cutting their heads off like a chainsaw cutting a piece of grass. Then he sucks their soul out and feeds on them. It gives him eternal life. As long as he keeps gnawing at people's life, sucking out their consciousness; bringing them into death, he can live.

Candles

'Candles' by Sylvia Plath was used for an exercise in the Writing Workshop. Children were asked to read the first two verses of her poem before continuing in their own words. Christos has won the Star Writer of the Week award this week for his interpretation of this exercise. (For the full poem type 'candles' 'plath' into Google.) This is what he wrote...

My shadow against the shadow of your flame,

A tender gaze from the icon besides,

Happy, I have acquainted the beauty of youth and light,

Now your tears are travelling down the white numbness of your body,

Will soon become a speck from a vast memory,

Like so many before,

An after taste of life.
