Maths Advice and games for Year 5 children

Know your times-tables up to x 10 off by heart. The quicker you master these, the easier maths in Year 5 and Year 6 will become. Your knowledge of your tables and associated division is useful in fractions, decimals, word problems, shape, money, etc, etc. The list is endless.

Five minutes everyday on times-tables, keeps them fresh in your memory. Do them at the breakfast table or on the way to school. Chant them out regularly. As a treat play some of the times-table games below.

Mental Arithmetic Book 4Buy the Schofield & Sims Mental Arithmetic Books for Key Stage 2. Many tutors and parents are familiar with these cheap (£1.95 each! )but highly useful resource. The books are full of endless questions which use a range of vocabulary and expose the children to several ways of solving problems. The average Year 5 should be looking at Book 3 or 4 by now and some may be ready for Book 5.

These books really help finding areas for development. I tend to ask children to complete section A and B of each page against the clock in the few times I have used them. Whereas Section C is done in their own time.

Although the book is intended to be for mental arithmetic, there is nothing wrong with writing down calculations if this helps until the child masters it.

Section C is arguably the most useful section because it provides children with the area that is more often than not their achilles heel - word problems and investigations.

These books can be bought at Muswell Hill Bookshop, WHSmith, or Amazon.
