Ashlyns Organic Farm Trip

So much for the weather forcast - the rain stayed away and the sun came out. We had a great trip to the farm. It was a bit cold and muddy but we didn't mind. We enjoyed feeding pigs, sheep, goats and the black rock chickens.

Then we went on a tractor ride where we saw some more free range chickens and a smelly compost heap.

We also went on a nature walk where we had a close look at hedge rows and all the things that grow there. We also saw some Canadian geese that fly back to Canada every year (Ms Dreger thinks she recognised some of them).  And Beatrix spotted a broken egg in the resevoir.  Click on the farm photos link to see more of our trip. (Click on the actual phots to start the slide show - lots to see!)

Autumn Food Project

7th November

Dear Parent/Carers,

Please note that there will be a slight change in the way that homework will be managed for the next half term.  In the infants we only require that your child brings in the homework sheet with your initial to acknowledgement that the work has been done.  If this is done regularly then there won’t be a mad rush at the end.

Work should be compiled in some form – either a booklet or folder so that it will be contained and easy to present to the class.

In year two we are working on the presentation of children’s work. We would therefore encourage you to make sure that the work in neatly presented and written out if writing is involved.

Children should aim to do about 15 minutes of work. We are aware that means some will accomplish more than others, remember, it is not quantity but quality that we are aiming for. This should not be a chore but something that you and your child can enjoy together.

We have arranged the homework to coincide with the work that we will be covering in the class during the term.

Please remember that you should also read with your child on a daily basis – there is room for you to initial that you have heard your child read on the homework form.  Not only should you hear your child read, but it would also be good for them to hear you read to them – this does not have to be their reading book.

Remember this is something that you should all enjoy together – it should not be chore.

Mr Lanfranchi and Ms Dreger

You can find a downloadable version of this letter and a copy of the homework sheet in the info section to the right of this page.

Our Andy Goldsworthy trip to Highgate Woods  was a great success!.

RECENTLY ADDED
homework schedule (see right of page)

book report (see right of page)

BOOK REPORT

Children can get an extra point for their team by completing a book report (a copy can be downloaded from the right side of this page).

Book reports should not only contain the title, author and illustrator but also a brief 'blurb' (not as it is written on the book).  There should also be a picture to go along with it - remembering to colour in the WHOLE box.

As with all homework - the work should show care, effort and pride in the way it is presented.

POINTS

Children have been put into various groups within class one of which is a flower group where they can earn points towards a prize at the end of the term.  Besides working well as a team, they can gain  points for their flower group collecting infomation about their fruit and their country reading groups (a bonus point for each).

The information that they collect may consist of research from either books, magazines or using the internet.  Text should not be copied directly but put into language that other children can understand. They may use pictures, either that they have drawn themselves or have cut out.  I have asked that they supply at least three facts of information about their topic.  Their work can be presented as a poster or on A4 paper and should reflect that they have taken care and are proud of their work.

This is something that parents and children can enjoy doing together.

Who knows, you may learn something new too.

RUSTY

An important member of our class is Rusty (our bear), who Ms Dreger brought back from Niagra Falls in Canada.  Rusty likes to get hugs from children and often makes them feel better if they happen to be feeling a bit sad or lonely.

Rusty also likes to go on holidays with the children as he thinks looking out of the classroom window can get a bit lonely with no one else around. This means that he has been to some amazing places including: Australia with Cameron; Spain with Anna; with James he travelled to Sweden and he also went to Florida with Ezria for American Thanksgivin and on a donkey ride in Paris with Viva.  When he was in Portugal with Alana, he sent us a postcard (he is a clever bear).  Rusty has also enjoyed travels in Great Britain, including trips to Wales and Devon.

We think he is a great bear to have in the class!

WRITTEN HOMEWORK

When children are doing any type of written work at home please ensure that they:

➢  make sure sentences START with a capital letter and END with a full stop (. ? or !)

➢  use simple connectives like and, but and because

They should also work TOWARDS using the following to make their sentences more interesting.

➢    write  sentences in joined up writing

➢   LETTERS should be
-    the right way round (common reversals include a, b, d, j)
-    the same size
-    the tall letters should be tall (b,d,f,h,k,l,t)
-    the letters that go below the line should go below (f, g, j, p, q)

➢    Use CONNECTIVES other than and, but and because, to join phrases
examples: then, when, also, after, instead, so, until, or, next

➢    Use DESCRIBING WORDS (adjectives) to make your sentences more interesting (i.e. colour, size, feelings, numbers)

Children should aim to spell the words
on the High Frequency List correctly.

A printable version of high frequency words can be found on the right side of this page in the INFO section and would be good to have available as a reference when children are writing their sentences.
