Welcome back to all:

There is a downloadable copy of the summer newsletter in the information section on the right side of this page.

You will also find information there about what our week looks like (remembering that this is always subject to change).

Homework

WORLD CUP FEVER has even hit our home for this part of the term - hope you can all get in to the fun of it (GO NETHERLANDS GO..... oops GO ENGLAND GO). If you have not received a copy of the homework or have lost it, you can down load a copy from the information section of this page.

TRIP - We shall be going to the British Museum on Friday the 25th of June - please make sure you have completed an authorisation form for your child/children to go.

Also, if you would like to assisst on the trip, please write your name on the bottom of the form.

Spelling

Spelling patterns for this term will include the following:

  • short vowel (remind children that this usually means ONLY ONE VOWEL).
  • split digraphs (also known as the magic e)
  • k or ck ending (hint: ck ending after a short vowel ie pick, pink - k because there is a consonant after teh short vowel and before the k)
  • ea - as a short vowel (bread) and long vowel (read) - TRICKY
  • adding suffix ie ing or ed to word (to short vowel words there MUST be two consonants before the suffix 'short vowel, two consonants, i-n-g)
  • adding prefix to words (un, dis)
  • ir and er
  • remember wa spelling for words that sound like it should be spelled wo

Continue to work on hi-frequency words in spelling sentences - choose one or two tricky words to focus on every week.

 EXTRA POINTS

Again, points can be collected in various ways.  Children have been placed in flower groups and can get an extra point for their team if they bring in at least three interesting facts about their flower.

Work should be neatly presented and may inlcude their own drawings.  It is also important that the work that is presented is in child friendly language, there have been occasions when children are struggling with words they can't read or understand.

Everyone also has a new country readiing group, most of them are in various continents.  And again for a point, at least three facts can be brought in about their 'country' . This is a good time to spend together talking about the world and to learn some interesting things about a new place (and compare it to where we live).

Challenge: Parents see if you can learn something new with your child... your child can get a bonus point for this!

FIRE!  FIRE!

London Fire Brigade was in on Monday to tell us how to be safe in our homes.  We learned what to do if there is a fire and who to call (did you know you can dial, 999, 911 AND 112?). For more activies and games about being safe click on fire.  There are also some activities on the EU 112 website AND you can even practice your French or Dutch as you can choose to do the activity in different languages.

Maths quiz:
Some parents have been asking what kind of questions are given in the maths quiz.  Please click quiz for a 'taster'.  The more you apply maths to your chlds daily life, the better and easier it becomes for them to use.

There are also various websites with fun activities in maths, literacy and science for children to do - just go to the links section at the top of the page for and go to specific curriculum areas.

Bonus points can be earned for animal groups by completing book reports and various challenges given out in class.

Please remember that children should bring in LABELED PE kits on a weekly basis.  It is also necesarry that children have and bring in a book bag. There are regualar occurances when books and letters have to be sent home, but children do not have a bookbag in class to use, meaning communications tend to get lost. If you do not have a book bag, they can be purchased from the school office.

RUSTY

An important member of our class is Rusty (our bear), who Ms Dreger brought back from Niagra Falls in Canada.  Rusty likes to get hugs from children and often makes them feel better if they happen to be feeling a bit sad or lonely.

Rusty also likes to go on holidays with the children as he thinks looking out of the classroom window can get a bit lonely with no one else around. This means that he has been to some amazing places including: Australia with Cameron; Spain with Anna; with James he travelled to Sweden and he also went to Florida with Ezria for American Thanksgiving and on a donkey ride in Paris with Viva.  When he was in Portugal with Alana, he sent us a postcard (he is a clever bear).  Rusty has also enjoyed travels in Great Britain, including trips to Wales and Devon.

We think he is a great bear to have in the class!

WRITTEN HOMEWORK

When children are doing any type of written work at home please ensure that they:

➢  make sure sentences START with a capital letter and END with a full stop (. ? or !)

➢  use simple connectives like and, but and because

They should also work TOWARDS using the following to make their sentences more interesting.

➢    write  sentences in joined up writing

➢   LETTERS should be
-    the right way round (common reversals include a, b, d, j)
-    the same size
-    the tall letters should be tall (b,d,f,h,k,l,t)
-    the letters that go below the line should go below (f, g, j, p, q)

➢    Use CONNECTIVES other than and, but and because, to join phrases
examples: then, when, also, after, instead, so, until, or, next

➢    Use DESCRIBING WORDS (adjectives) to make your sentences more interesting (i.e. colour, size, feelings, numbers)

Children should aim to spell the words
on the High Frequency List correctly.

A printable version of high frequency words can be found on the right side of this page in the INFO section and would be good to have available as a reference when children are writing their sentences.

ALSO - have you checked out the links section of the school website (look at the top of this page) - there are some fun website to go on to.
