(26.3.09) Football Success! - Well done Year 5 for beating Highgate Primary 4-2 this week!

(24.3.09) Please feel free to see me about any pressing matter and for anything I promised you. My memory isn't like it used to be. Apologies too for not keeping some of the pages of this website completely up to date. We'll try to catch up in the summer term!
(24.3.09) There is no maths homework this week. This is to allow children to spend more time on finishing 'Famous People' projects. Children should bring in their completed projects ideally on Monday but no later than Tuesday of next week.
Just to clear up some confusion about the masks. We have recently started a complimentary project in class thanks to Kate (Frankie's mum). This was intended to inspire and provide tips for the children for their mask projects at home. It's a great art lesson and the children have had fun so far.
(23.3.09) Please find more photos of Susie's passion presentation in the link left.
I have also attached some guidance regarding reading comprehension in the info section to the right. This might come in handy in the near and distant future.
(23.3.09) Just to confirm that swimming is definitely on tomorrow as usual. Please collect your children as usual.
(22.3.09) Please find enclosed right this week's 'rough' time-table.
(22.3.09) Passion Scrapbooks - May I remind children and parents that the children should be carrying out their scrapbooks. Contents such as drawings, photos, writing, etc should be brought into school or made at school in their spare time. There are also activities to be completed for me. So far children should have completed (1) A storyboard (2) Wordsearch (3) Poem and - by this week - a piece of creative writing on an object. Scrapbooks will be presented to the rest of the class sometime in early July when we will also have our 'Passion' day - details to follow.
(22.3.09) May I remind you that I will not be at school on the last 3 days of term because I am off to Flatford with Year 4. Please ensure you speak to me before then if you have any queries etc.
NB: It looks like the maths support group will have to start after Easter.
(22.3.09) If I owe or promised you anything please feel free to visit me in class (esp maths!). Nothing is at straight forward as it seems!!
NB: I really recommend that every child spends time in the Maths Club (see left).
(22.3.09) Susie's passion presentation was 'wheelie' terrific. Those children who did not have rollers brought in alternative means of wheels as you will see in the photos. Please find these in the link to the left very soon.

(18.3.09) Misc - Please ensure your child brings in their maths homework. I am missing several pieces including work on 'cultural maths', 'probability', and 'time'. Homework is a vital part of their development in maths. Please also practise spellings. The results of the last two week's spellings will be sent out tomorrow. A new sheet focusing on words with 'ie' or 'ei' patterns was sent out on Monday and will be tested near the end of term.
Maths support groups will start soon.
(17.3.09) Comic Relief - Please go to the photos link left for more photos of our coffee morning and superhero mufti day. Much fun was had and more importantly 5W and the rest of the school raised lots of money for Comic Relief. (Figures to follow).

(17.3.09) Is there a parent who can come in every Wednesday morning for an hour or two who can help with work in the Green Room? All those with green fingers are welcome.
(16.3.09) Some brilliant writing in school at the moment. Well done 5W! Copies of a random spelling test of words from last half-term will be sent out tomorrow.
Maths Homework - May I stress the importance of accommodating the needs of your child by changing maths homework to suit their ability. If a child finds a task too difficult, please look to amend the data to suit them or produce a similar piece of homework that shows effort towards reaching the next stage of their development. Alternatively, please come and ask for another homework. Most homeworks should, however, be accessible for all children.
This week's homework involves using 'trial and error'. It is important for children to realise that several attempts may be needed to solve problems. Too many are ready to give up when the answer does not come easily to them. Learning from mistakes or inaccuracies is a vital part of their development.
Handwriting - Please do all you can at home to help your child improve their handwriting and presentation. Simple things like avoiding unnecessary capitals and using the whole line when writing should be eradicated by now. Useful sheets can be found through the link below.
Handwriting sheets

If you've not received a letter from your child, please ask for a form in the office.
( 28.2.09) It seemed that throughout the week we always seemed to have too many people missing through holidays, illnesses, music tutors, orchestra, and cycling amongst other things; to carry out the lengthy spelling test. I'm hoping that most will be present on Monday to carry it out.
Children need to bring into school 1 small object related to their passion by Monday please as well as thier maths homework on the Arabic number system. We will be handing out a short half-term project now entitled 'Famous People' on Monday along with two weeks worth of new spellings.

(10.2.09) Super Writer of the Week - Last week's writer of the week was ..........(see link left).
(10.2.09) Homework Projects - Children should ideally bring their projects in tomorrow if possible for presentation. If this is impossible, Thursday is the final deadline. Children who need more time to complete the project require a letter of explanation from home.

(9.2.09) As Class 5R missed out on swimming last week, they will be swimming this week. 5W's next swimming session will be the first Tuesday back after half-term.
(8.2.09) Homework Projects - As Thursday is a school mufti day, I have had to have a rethink regarding the dressing up element of the presentation of the project. Wednesday has now been set aside for this and this is now the deadline date. However, if children are struggling to finish in time, I am quite happy to discuss in this case an alternative arrangement as long as a note is provided by a parent.
(8.2.09) Unfortunately I've been having a few problems with the computer this weekend so I haven't been able to put together a downloadable weekly time-table. A brief description of the week however, can be found below. Afternoon lessons are as usual. Will let you know if there's any swimming asap.
Monday: Maths Assessment and Poetry.
Tuesday: Maths Assessment, Poetry plus Parent Consultation evening.
Wednesday: Project Presentations a.m.
Thursday: Spelling ('shun' words) and Timestable Tests (see project sheet for which tables), plus ICT.

(2) Georgia would like to remind everybody to bring in their P.E kit tomorrow for her dance passion presentation and lesson.
(3) I'm still looking for some outstanding maths homework on area and averages!! As the children are busy completing projects, we have decided not to give out any more maths homework until after half-term. Next week children will be assessed in maths with copies of their papers being made available to take home for half-term. Next week will also include a spelling and times-table test (
(4) Various events - including the snow - have disrupted the weekly schedule and routine. I hope things get back to being relatively 'normal' after half-term!

Enjoy the snow! If you haven't thought of which weather to use for your story then get out there today and enjoy the snow!!! Listen to the silence that snow brings and use all your other senses to inspire you! I'm off now to throw some snowballs at the dog!
Just in case you're missing school, here's a photo of what you're missing. (Taken 8.15a.m today!)
(2.2.09) I know this might be a big ask but does anyone have any size 11 black plimsolls or similar I could borrow for the panto. I'm a pirate who doesn't like having cold feet! Thanks for looking anyway!

5. Write a communal poem at home and win 2 smiley faces. See the poetry section in the Writing Workshop.

All of the words from this half-term will be tested again on the first day back after half-term. Maths homework will be handed out on Mondays and handed back in on the following Monday. Apologies for delays.
Still missing several maths homework sheets! Is it you???
Just to reiterate, adventure stories are due in for inspection by Friday 6th February - no matter what stage they are at.
NB: Please don't be overwhelmed by all the information you have been provided with for your story. Ultimately I want a story that entertains me that has evidence of planning and redrafting! How much effort you place into using the advice and information is entirely up to you. However, those that do study and apply the advice are more likely to produce the entertaining story I am after!
Read a few short stories first and analyse them like 'Harwell Hall'.
(30.1.09) Newspaper Club - Due to popular demand in 5W, I have decided to allow all of the applicants to attend the newspaper club. I just loved their enthusiasm! All children who handed me a form and payment should arrive at school at 7.45 a.m for breakfast this Wednesday.
(29.1.09) Just to stress that no child should hand in their newspaper club application before 8.45 a.m tomorrow when I arrive in the playground.

We're all looking to Hugo's passion presentation tomorrow! Good luck Hugo!
(29.1.09) Times-table Tests - A copy of the recent test has been attached right. Do whatever you can to work on the areas for development. Current trend is for children to apply their knowledge of their times-tables to solve simple problems. Hence the number of 'word problems' involved in this test.
(27.1.09) Homework Project - The 'Weather' adventure story
Info out today with children as well as results of spelling and times-table tests. See advice and info sheet in the info section right.
(27.1.09) The maths homework on 'area' is required by tomorrow please. Please ensure your child is bringing in their homework. Some children are regularly not bringing in their work and this does set a bad example to others.
(26.1.09) Communal Poems - 5W will be writing several communal poems over the coming months. They have been asked to include one in their passion scrapbooks this week. A communal poem, as its title suggests, is a poem that everyone contributes a line (or sometimes a verse). Each child was asked to write just one line with only the title to guide them and then they read these out one at a time. Our poem today was called 'Dreams'. Take a look at it in the Writing Workshop. Ask your child which line they wrote!
( 26.1.09) 'Weather' story - Information and advice on writing the perfect weather story for the homework project will be sent out tomorrow. Whatever you do, please don't start writing your story yet!

(25.1.09) Barometers - Can it be stressed again that we do not want to see the barometers in 5W tomorrow. These should be brought in at the end of half-term. Tomorrow we are looking for each child to bring in their written work and diagrams to discuss only.

Misc - (1) Well done to Groups 1 and 5 for winning the 'Battle of the Marbles'. They both won 30 minutes of golden time this week.
(2) May I remind parents once again that some children are missing important lessons in Literacy and Maths when they are removed for music tutorials. Most of these children this year are those who need additional support. If at all possible music tutorials should be carried out in the afternoon.

1. Most children were provided with a copy of their maths assessment from the end of the Autumn Term today. This paper from taken from a new scheme that we are using called Abacus. Please bear in mind that we dipped in and out of the scheme throughout the term and did not follow the book religiously. Therefore some of the questions asked may or may not have been covered. It does however provide a guide to where the children are, and with the areas for development. Much of the other maths time-table has been spent on the key objectives for Year 5 (see Maths Club).
At the end of this half-term I will be carrying out two assessments. One from Abacus and another based on the key objectives for Year 5. Copies of which will be provided to you by half-term.
2. Most children were also provided today with their grades and certificates for their Food projects. I am still waiting for a few to be handed in!! Well done to everybody for such a brilliant effort. They were fun reading and tasting!

(4.1.09) Happy New Year to everyone!! It's going to be a busy one!
Miscellaneous Items
1. The weekly time-table will commence once again next week (WB 12.1.09). This week we will be looking at the children's food projects and handing out certificates like last term. We will also be looking at storyboarding, screenwriting, and the relationship between writing and films in preparation for the movie 'Coraline'.
In maths we will be focusing on areas that need reinforcement on the evidence of the end of term assessment plus subtraction.
2. Don't forget to look at this term's 'passion' time-table to check when it is your turn. The children seemed to like their gifts last term - phew! Which reminds me! May I take this opportunity to thank you all for all the wonderful Christmas gifts! Thanks to the class reps for asking what I wanted. They were all perfect.
3. Class Reps - Can we meet later this week please!?
4. Don't forget that there will also be a maths page with ideas and advice this term. There will also be activities recommended for and by the children.
5. The homework project topic for this half-term is 'Weather'. Further details with you soon.
6. Please see attached right (see info) a copy of this half-term's sentence sheet (3 of 6). These sheets are highly recommended throughout Year 5 and 6.
