5W Homework Projects Advice for the Spring Term Projects 2009 This term's project will be graded threefold: (1) Practical (2) Presentation and (3) Written. However, it is highly recommended that most of your efforts should be placed into the writing element every week. Further advice and information on how to achieve a high standard in the writing tasks will be added to this page at the beginning of each week (by Tuesday). The most important aspect throughout is to use a range of sentence beginnings and types. Suggested examples are provided for you on Sheets 1, 2, and 3 on this website. Week 1 - The Weather Poem Every word in a poem is precious. Make every word count by making sure it is of use and brings power and great imagery to your writing. When you have written your first draft, go through the whole poem and delete all the words that can be taken away without affecting the meaning of your poem. Don't be too wordy. Can you write something in 2 words rather than 5? Bring the poem alive through colour, strong verbs, and the use of personfication and your senses. Make the weather devastate everything in its path and send a chill down the reader's spine. Week 2 - The Barometer You can either write this as instructions on how to make the barometer, or you can use explanation writing to explain how you made it yourself. Alternatively you may choose to use a little of both, i.e. explaining the science behind it (explanation) and how you made it (instructions). Please find below some tips and planning and evaluation sheets that will help you. Instructions: (1) Planning an instruction text (2) An instructions text checklist (3) Evaluating your writing of the text.
Explanation Writing: (1) Tips for writing explanation texts (2) Explanation texts checklist (3) Explanation writing frame (to use in planning the structure of your writing only)
Hope this helps you! Good luck!
