(4.7.09) Hello I'm back! Sorry for the delay in updating the site of late. All of my spare time has been spent writing reports and organising the sports day. Anyway, I've finally managed to update the 'Passion' presentation photos. Paris photos will hopefully be up on this site before the end of term.
This week we will be finishing our dolphin experience with Beatrix on Monday, before playing tennis with Michael on Tuesday (his passion!). The day after we celebrate 'Passion Day'!!! Could class reps come forward to discuss this on Monday please? I will need help on the day. Many thanks. NB: Thank you for coming to see the children's assembly. They certainly have a great imagination! NB: A reminder that 'Family Tree' projects should be presented this week. We would like to see all of the projects by Wednesday please. Please ensure that the children bring in both of these on Monday (the project so far that is!). Project certificates for the environment project will be with the children soon. Spelling test tomorrow!
(7.6.09) Phew! Back from PGL with the realisation that the website has been a bit neglected! I will do my best to add things when I can. However, much of my time of the next month will be spent report writing! Thanks to Miss Bosanquet for doing such a great job whilst I've been away! (1) Passion Day - Passion day has now been confirmed and will now take place on Wednesday 8th July. This is a day in which all of the children's passions will be on view in a variety of ways. Can you help?? Passions will recommence this week!!! (2) Projects - Should have the project information with you by Tuesday. It's likely to involve organisation for the Passion Day. (21.5.09) Important information I have asked the children to ensure they bring in their decimal homework and 'House' project by tomorrow. The projects so far look fantastic. Spellings - I have handed out the children's recent spelling test papers to the children today. PGL - May I remind you that I will be away with Year 6 at PGL throughout the first week back after half-term. Miss Bosanquet and Mrs Parker will be sharing the teaching of 5W.

(16.5.09) Cliff McNish We are all looking forward to the visit of the renowned children's fantasy author Cliff McNish this Tuesday 19th May. Cliff will be carrying out two workshops each for both Year 5 classes based on story beginnings and characters. Please try to purchase Cliff's books from your local children's book shop and bring them along for book signing.

(16.5.09) Misc - Don't forget! All maths homework to be handed in by tomorrow please! Please find this week's rough time-table in the info section right. (By the way, you can now download this term's Summer term passion time-table successfully. Apologies to those who tried and found the Spring term by mistake!!)
(16.5.09) Mahnoor's passion presentation - The only thing missing from Mahnoor's chemistry passion presentation was a snap, a crackle, and a pop! However, the experiment she shared with the class was really interesting and everyone enjoyed it. See more photos on the passion page left. (NB: Max S will have more photos soon)
(12.5.09) Homework - I want to set the class a target. All have been given a maths homework on currency exchange rates using decimals. I would like to see EVERYONE hand theirs in by Monday please. NB: I hope your projects are getting along just fine. Keep bringing them in so that we can have a look at them so far!
(12.5.09) Assembly - Tomorrow's assembly will be interesting because we haven't had much time to rehearse it!! Most of it will be improvisation. All welcome!
(12.5.09) Ragged School Museum - What a great time was had by Year 5 at the Ragged School Museum. The children experienced life in a Victorian home and in a Victorian classroom with teacher Miss Perkins. For more photos go to the 'School Trips' link to the left of this page.
(11.5.09) Max's Passion Presentation - Max S shared with great enthusiasm his passion for hamsters. More photos to follow.
(10.5.09) Did you like 'Coraline' the movie? Come with your thoughts for discussion tomorrow. As far as I'm concerned - it just wasn't the book! Need I say anymore?
(10.5.09) Thank for Max S for the great passion presentation on hamsters! We have a fun quiz to look forward to as well. Photos to follow.
(10.5.09) Misc - Please find this week's class timetable attached right. We have an exciting week ahead with the Ragged School Museum on Tuesday and the class assembly on Wednesday. Please make sure your children are learning their spellings. Please also ensure that they hand in their maths homework on mode, median, and mean. There will be another homework handed out tomorrow. May I remind those children who still haven't handed in their 'Famous People' projects to do so by tomorrow. Children should also bring in their 'House of the Future' work tomorrow for discussion. More maths games are now available in the Maths Club to help support this week's maths.
(9.5.09) Coraline - I hope you didn't have too many nightmares last night! A small prize will be given to anyone who writes a review for me comparing the film with the book! Your review will be added to this website. (On a memory stick preferably but handwritten is fine too!)
(8.5.09) See you at the Vue at North Finchley from 6.45p.m. Adults attending are asked to spread themselves amongst the children in the cinema so that children are not left alone. Looking forward to it!! MW
(7.5.09) Apologies for the rather rushed 'Coraline' note which was full of mistakes. I forgot all about the note and did not have time to check it before printing it out for the children. I hope you got the gist of it! Please find below an error free version if you didn't!!!!!! ‘Coraline’ is here! 7th May 2009
Dear Parent/Carer,
Unfortunately the Odeon at Muswell Hill will not be showing ‘Coraline’ from Friday as I assumed. Therefore, we have changed the venue to the Vue Cinema at North Finchley – the popcorn is better there anyway!!!
The film begins at 7.20p.m and will finish approximately at 9.30p.m. Children should organise lifts and meet at the cinema from 6.45 p.m and no later than 7.00p.m to allow everyone to purchase refreshments in time for the show. As things stand there are 54 of us attending (including adults) and we want everyone to be sat ready for the trailers and movie on time. I will be there throughout to supervise everything. If you would like me to look after your child, please feel free to ask me but make sure you are at the cinema entrance to collect them no later than 9.30p.m.
As things stand tickets are priced at £5.85 for children and £7.85 for adults. This money needs to be brought into school tomorrow morning so that I have the money in advance. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! Cash is preferred although I will accept cheques made payable to me.
(4.5.09) I will be catching up with all things to do with the Book Club soon. In the meantime Elisabeth - thanks for your wonderful book and object! We will be writing about your object very soon.
(4.5.09) Do you have any Mr. Men books at home? Please bring them in to help with a project for this term! If you do I'll be Mr. Happy! Thanks. MW.
(4.5.09) Spring Term 'Famous People' projects - I've just managed to find time to go through the Spring Term projects and will be giving out certificates later this week. I must say I am extraordinarily impressed by the projects I have seen, some of which have left me breathless because of the amount of effort and attention to detail and consideration for presentation. A massive WELL DONE to those children who have handed in their projects - ALL of which have been to a very high standard indeed. This has had a very positive effect on the standard of their work in class too! However, I am still missing 'several' projects. Every child should hand in a project even if it is not as comprehensive in effort and detail as suggested in the project letter. A project is better than no project! For example, a biography of one famous person is better than nothing. Another project has been given out that involves designing a 'House of the Future'. Children who do not keep to deadlines - even those deadlines that are reasonably flexible - will only develop bad habits and find themselves 'snowballed' by further deadline requirements. For those children who have not handed in their 'Famous People' projects I am setting another deadline of Monday 11th May. Please do your best!!! ; )
Children should bring in their 'House' projects every Monday to share with others their progress and ideas. This week children should bring their projects in on Tuesday or by the latest Wednesday. NB: I am also missing maths homework. Can children ensure they bring in their 'mean, mode, median' homework this week? Thanks.
'Coraline' Movie Optional Excursion!
(3.5.09) Silly as it may sound but the Odeon at Muswell Hill cannot confirm whether they will be screening 'Coraline' from Friday 8th May until this Wednesday 6th May. Tickets therefore cannot be pre-booked until then. It is, however, highly likely that a screening will take place around about 6 p.m on Friday and this is when all of Year 5 are invited to attend if they wish to watch the movie together. This Tuesday I will be sending out a letter asking you to confirm ticket requirements for the evening and if interest is high I should be able to require a discounted price as part of a bulk order. A copy of this letter is available to download in the general info section (see right), if you wish to get your order in quickly.
(3.5.09) 5W produced some fantastic creative writing this last week. Well done to Georgia and Alex for their outstanding poems based on Simon Armitage's 'Robinson's Life Sentence'. These were read brilliantly in the Friday assembly. I will try to place copies of this on the website soon.
(3.5.09) I will not be requiring the help of parents this week for reading groups as the children will be carrying out SATs papers.
(3.5.09) Important information regarding the next week ahead.
(1.5.09) Passion Presentation - Thank you Frankie for a very entertaining and highly funny passion presentation on pandas! It brought to our attention how marvellous a performer you are. For more photos go to the Summer Term passion page left. NB: PLEASE SEE THE CONFIRMED PASSION TIMETABLE FOR THIS TERM IN THE INFO SECTION RIGHT.
(1.5.09) 5W spent Wednesday morning studying mini-beasts in the pond outside the Crowcroft Room.
(30.4.09) Passions - Frankie would like the class to bring to school with them some black and white clothing for her session on pandas! However, please come to school in school uniform as usual.
(27.4.09) Swimming groups remain the same tomorrow unless your child has been told otherwise. (26.4.09) Miscellaneous - (1) This week is 'Creative Writing' week at St. Michael's so the time-table will be full of fun activities. (2) Have you paid for the Ragged School Museum trip yet? (3) Don't forget to bring in initial ideas and work for the 'House of the Future' project tomorrow. (4) Please find this week's class timetable, a copy of the project letter, a copy of the Summer term letter, and a copy of the first two sets of spelling for the summer term - all attached right.
(26.4.09) Website - Unfortunately I have had to discontinue some of the features of this website. I will continue to add some things to the 'Writing Workshop' as and when time allows. The 'Super Writer of the Week', however, will now only be announced in the classroom as appropriate. The Maths Club will continue as usual and I highly recommend children use the links as much as possible to practise areas for development over the next week.
(26.4.09) Class 5W would like to welcome Miss Rachel Bosanquet to Year 5. Miss Bosanquet will be helping Mr. Whiting teach for the next 6 weeks. Please say hello to her when you can!
(25.4.09) A class rep visit would be appreciated. Thanks.
(24.4.09) Spelling test now on Monday for the words from last half-term.
(24.4.09) Summer Term Passions - Please see below this term's passion timetable confirmed.
NB: Please note that the Beatrix and Elisabeth presentations will be held in the same week to help complete in time for the 'passion day' (date tbc).
(22.4.09) If you've not received a copy of the homework project sheet, the next two week's spellings, and the letter to parents for the summer term - don't worry! You will be able to download these very soon from this website. NB: The spellings from last half-term will be tested again this Friday so please spend time practising those words that were spelt incorrectly last time. NB: Passion presentations will continue this week with Christos. His passion is the cello! Children who presented their passions last term will be receiving their passion gifts later this week I hope!!!
See the trailer here.
(22.4.09) Some of the amazing masks made by the children of 5W last half-term! Can you spot Elvis and Madonna?
(22.4.09) Could a class rep visit me this week please? (Regarding movies, passions, and authors!)
(21.4.09) Things will be back to normal on this website next week. However, I have added some useful links to help as usual in the Maths Club.
(20.4.09) Please see outline of this term's planning for Year 5 in the 'general' section right. (19.4.09) Swimming - Swimming will recommence WB 27.4.09. There will be no swimming this week on the first day of the new term. (19.4.09) Spellings - We will be re-testing the spellings words from last half-term later this week.

That's me!

(26.4.09) Christos' Passion Presentation - Wow! What a talent we have in our midst! Britain has definitely got talent! See the Summer Term 'Passion' page for more photos.
(22.4.09) Coraline - We are looking to organise a get together at a local cinema soon to see 'Coraline' - an animated film based on the Year 5 autumn term class book written by Neil Gaiman. The film is due for release on the 8th May and the idea is that we all meet and spend time watching it together. It will be an optional excursion probably in the early evening somewhere near the release date. We may be able to buy tickets in bulk and receive a discount if there is enough interest. More news to follow.
