'Coraline' Movie Optional Excursion!

(3.5.09) Silly as it may sound but the Odeon at Muswell Hill cannot confirm whether they will be screening 'Coraline' from Friday 8th May until this Wednesday 6th May. Tickets therefore cannot be pre-booked until then. It is, however, highly likely that a screening will take place around about 6 p.m on Friday and this is when all of Year 5 are invited to attend if they wish to watch the movie together. This Tuesday I will be sending out a letter asking you to confirm ticket requirements for the evening and if interest is high I should be able to require a discounted price as part of a bulk order. A copy of this letter is available to download in the general info section (see right), if you wish to get your order in quickly.
(22.4.09) Coraline - We are looking to organise a get together at a local cinema soon to see 'Coraline' - an animated film based on the Year 5 class book written by Neil Gaiman. The film is due for release on the 8th May and the idea is that we all meet and spend time watching it together. It will be an optional excursion probably in the early evening somewhere near the release date. We may be able to buy tickets in bulk and receive a discount if there is enough interest. More news to follow.

YEAR 5 Spring Term Letter 2009
Dear Parents/Carers,
Happy New Year to you all! We hope you had an excellent Christmas and are looking forward to a prosperous new year! Please find below information for Spring term 2009. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your Christmas gifts. They were really appreciated!
This term:
Curriculum: English: We will continue to follow the National Literacy Strategy. However, we will be particularly concentrating on persuasive writing, story writing, and report writing. We will also continue to train the children to vary the sentences and enhance the vocabulary in their work. Spellings will also focus on vocabulary as well as a study of a range of suffixes.
Maths: We will be following the National Numeracy Strategy. Please spend time at home on times-tables and mastering the standard written methods for the four operations, as this will enhance the children’s chances of making giant strides.
Science: Earth and Rocks
R.E : Psalms, Proverbs, and Easter.
Global Citizenship: ‘Rainforests’ (cont) and ‘Water’
Topic work: This term’s topic is the ‘Victorians’. As part of this study, there will be a special trip to the Ragged Museum in SE London where the children will dress and experience a Victorian lesson and study in depth Victorian home-life. Half of Year 5 will attend on the 30th March and half on the 31st March 2009. Further details to follow.
Swimming: Children in Year 5 will continue to have regular swimming lessons at Highgate School on Tuesdays. Girls should bring with them a one-piece swimsuit and boys should bring trunks or speedos but not long shorts. Everyone must wear a hat, bring a towel, and goggles and asthma pumps if necessary. Swimming will start once again on Tuesday 13th January with 5W. Details regarding the groupings will be with you soon. PLEASE DON’T FORGET YOUR KIT FOR P.E every Tuesday, and swimming every other Tuesday.
Equipment: Although the school has a limited supply of resources, we would like to encourage children to become more responsible for bringing their own pencil case with a handwriting pen (no fountain pens please and blue ink ideally), a ruler, a rubber, pencils, and pencil crayons. This year there appears to be a higher than usual degree of items that are being lost or broken. It is hoped that items that belong to the children will be looked after more carefully and therefore reduce school costs. Children may also like to bring some safety scissors, coloured pencils and a Pritstick. Of course all these items will be made available to children who need them. Don’t forget that an overall or an old shirt is needed for art as well.
France: Further information regarding the trip to Paris in the Summer Term will be sent out by Mrs Donaldson soon. You should have already received a medical/dietary form which needs to be completed and returned to your class teacher immediately.
Class Assemblies : Dates for this term are: 5W: March 4th
5R : January 14th, March 18th
Website: We are continuing to update the website as much as possible. Please try to look at the main Year 5 page regularly as this will increasingly become a source of advice and information.
If you wish to contact us, please feel free to speak to us directly in the playground in the morning, or via a note through your child. We look forward to a rewarding year with the children.
Kind regards Michael Whiting Al Ross
As far as the spelling test is concerned, a score of 75% or more is ideal. We suggest that mis-spelt words should be worked on separately and independently in the coming months. There will be no further test on these words as we want to continue expanding their spelling skills and vocabulary in the Spring term.
(3.12.08) Details and more photos to follow.
Come on St. Michael's!
We played two games. The first game we won 7 tries to 1. The second game we think the score was 7-4 to the other side who were obviously well ahead of us in match practice.
Anyway, the experience of playing on the Wembley pitch was the real winner and some of our children can now truthfully say that 'they scored at Wembley!'
