Autumn Term

In Reception the children explore a variety of topics throughout the year. In the Autumn Term our topic is ‘Ourselves.’ This topic encompasses Our Families, The Body and The Senses.   We encourage children to talk about their families and they are invited to bring in photographs of themselves as babies in order to observe and discuss changes that have taken place.  The senses are explored and a variety of hands on experiments and investigations take place.

Spring Term

In the Spring Term our topics are ‘Up In The Air’ and ‘Traditional Tales’.  When exploring ‘Up In The Air’ children focus on all aspects of the weather and begin to understand what causes natural phenomena like rainbows.  They will also look at space and different forms of transport.  Our topic on Traditional Tales enables the children to listen to a variety of stories encouraging them to sequence a story, using props and pictures. The children will also be going to the theatre, and this term we will be visiting the Tricyle Theatre to see Beauty and the Beast.

Summer Term

In the Summer Term our main topic is ‘Growing and Change.’ In the first part of the Summer term we look at different types of plants and how they grow and we take walks around the school grounds to observe plant life and its habitat. The children will also take part in growing and eating  their own  produce grown in the school allotment. In the 2nd half of the Summer Term we focus on animals and study the life cycle of a butterfly and observe changes that take place to the many tadpoles from our school pond.
