Learning about Folders and Files

1.

Creating folders and files.

  1. Open Windows Explorer  (Windows Key + 'E' - press the 'E' only briefly)
  2. Double-click on 'My Computer' and then on the 'H' drive to open it
  3. On the File menu choose NEW then FOLDER
  4. Name your folder
  5. Double-click to Open folder
  6. On the File menu choose NEW then FILE (Text Document)
  7. Name you file
  8. Double-click to open your file in Notepad
  9. Write your name and the date in your file
  10. Save your file and close Notepad

2.

Make a copy of a document with 'save as'.

  1. Click 'Start' then 'All Programs' then 'Accessories' and open Notepad
  2. Use the file menu in Notepad to open the file you previously saved on the H drive
  3. Once you have opened your file use 'save as' (also on the file menu) to make a copy of your file with a new name. This copy is what you are now working on.
  4. Write something extra in the open document (describe your favourite animal?).
  5. 'Save' the document. You DO NOT need to use 'save as' again at this point as you would then be making another copy.
  6. Close Notepad

3.

Moving and copying files between folders.

  1. Open two Windows Explorer windows (Windows key + 'E' twice).
  2. Arrange the two windows beside each-other.
  3. Find your folder on the 'H' drive in one of the windows and open it.
  4. In the other window create another new folder on the 'H' drive then open it.
  5. Now drag a file from your first folder into your new one and drop. This MOVES the file.
  6. Now press and hold the control key before you drag and drop another file between the folders. This COPIES the file.

Now practice minimising, maximising and restoring.

When you have done all the above you can choose an application on your computer such as Primary Games
