8 Feb 2010

Today was cold and the snow began to fall, so the planting out of our Japanese winter salad vegetables, beans and peas into our newly prepared terraces had to be postponed until after half term as the soil was too cold.  But it didn’t dampen enthusiasm.  One thing about gardening is that there are always plenty of tasks to do whatever the weather.

Today we concentrated on moving logs and hardcore away from the newt ponds so we can sow a wild flower garden. Newts need a wild habitat to snooze in and we need the newts because they eat the slugs that would otherwise munch their way through our lettuces and spinach. So we do a favour for the newts, they do a favour for us.

Coincidentally, Mr. Lanfranchi arrived with a huge bundle of wild flower seeds donated by the Co-op.  It couldn’t have been better timing!

To discourage unwelcome insects we also cleaned up the area around the compost heap, raking leaves and removing brambles. Despite the snow, we got a lot done.

We even had a chance to go over the four rules of safety in the garden:

  1. Always walk. Never run or hurry along the paths.
  2. Ensure your tools are left face down when not working with them to avoid accidents.
  3. Be responsible towards others. When using tools, handle them sensibly.
  4. Never walk on the freshly dug soil.  Only walk on the planks provided when planting out to avoid spoiling the soil.
